New Moon Watch: The Cosmic Egg

The Sabian symbol for last night’s solar eclipse is one of the most evocative in the series, and mirrors Obama‘s emergence as a symbol for a new form of leadership in the United States. I’m quoting from Dane Rudhyar‘s commentary and excellent book (really the only good book on the subject), An Astrological Mandala: The Cycle of Transformation and its 360 Degree Symbolic Phase.

The symbol for seven degrees Aquarius is: A child is seen being born out of an egg. Rudhyar writes that this marks the materialization of a “global man for the New Age.” Considering Obama’s ascendancy, and his political impact on the cross-cultural, world stage — the synchronicity is potent. Rudhyar explains that the “ancient symbolism of the Cosmic Egg out of which a new universe is born can be interpreted at several levels. Here we see the appearance of a new type of human being who is not born from “Ancestors” and who therefore is free from the inertia of mankind’s past. He is a new product of evolution, a mutant.”

Personally, for each of us, last night’s eclipse heralds our own cracking egg. What’s inside? Angel or demon?

The new moon chart is Aquarian through and through. With half of the solar system’s denizens moving through the Water Bearer, this signals a type of pressure on human relationships that can feel impersonal. The focus is on what unifies all of us as human beings, our connection to Source, Oneness, whatever you want to call it. Within the realm of interpersonal relationships, Aquarians are notoriously chilly. Not in a meanspirited way, but their wiring towards relationships gives us a clue. We don’t own other people, other people don’t own us. That’s the hardcore Aquarian truth to digest right now.

And of course the ongoing theme throughout this year, also with an Aquarian flavoring, is the powerful Saturn Uranus opposition. One minute we’re elated, inspired and ready to launch off into a new terrian, and then the next we’re frozen, fearful and feeling small. This is the alchemical dance of Saturn and Uranus. Contraction triggers expansion which triggers contraction which triggers expansion. This is how earthquakes happen too, so in addition to cracking eggs we should keep this terrestrial symbol of impermanence uppermost. Life now is all about shifting sands. We must learn to ride. Deal with it. Open up to embracing people, events, insights, states quickly — and then letting go twice as fast.

On a side note I highly recommend checking out David R. Roell‘s delineation of the presidential inaugural chart, available from his excellent bookstore and website AstroAmerica.com. Don’t miss it. You can download the PDF here.
